Mumbai, Dec 24 (ANI): Veteran director and screenwriter Shyam Benegal has passed away at the age of 90. He breathed his last today at 6:38 pm at Wockhardt Hospital, Mumbai Central, where he was undergoing treatment for chronic kidney disease. From Chiranjeevi to Akshay Kumar, actors expressed their grief over the passing away of the legendary filmmaker. Shyam Benegal was a pioneering force in the Indian parallel cinema movement.
Benegal's legacy as a filmmaker is firmly etched in Indian cinematic history, thanks to his profound contributions to the parallel cinema movement of the 1970s and 1980s. Benegal's artistry was recognized with numerous accolades, including the prestigious National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi, which he won seven times. In 2018, he was honoured with the V. Shantaram Lifetime Achievement Award for his remarkable contributions to Indian cinema.
Born on December 14, 1934, in a Konkani-speaking Chitrapur Saraswat Brahmin family in Hyderabad, Benegal's cinematic journey began with his education in the film industry. As tributes continue to pour in, Benegal's contribution to cinema is universally acknowledged.
