Ukraine claims it downed 57 missiles, drones

Aug 07, 2023

Kyiv [Ukraine], August 7: Russia renewed its aerial assault on Ukraine with waves of missiles and explosive-laden drones during the night, while a simultaneous drone attack on Moscow was reportedly foiled.
Ukraine's air force said on Sunday morning that it had destroyed 30 cruise missiles and 27 drones from a total of 70 projectiles launched. It was not initially disclosed where the missiles and drones that could not be intercepted had impacted. At the same time, the Russian military said it had repelled another Ukrainian drone attack on the capital Moscow. According to the Russian Defence Ministry, the drone was destroyed on Sunday morning by air defences near Podolsk in the southern Moscow region.
There were no injuries or damage, the ministry said. However, air traffic was temporarily suspended at Moscow's Vnukovo airport. There was initially no official reaction from Kiev to the claim.
Moscow has repeatedly been targeted by suspected Ukrainian drones, which have damaged building facades in the central skyscraper district of Moskva City. In most cases, no one was injured.
On Saturday evening, Ukrainian President VolodymyrZelensky said a blood transfusion centre had been separately bombed in the eastern Kharkiv region. There had also been attacks on the Zaporizhzhya and Khemlnytskyi regions, Zelensky said.
The Russian occupiers of the city of Donetsk in turn accused the Ukrainian army of shelling a university building there, but said there were no casualties. Information from Ukraine's occupied territories is often difficult to verify independently. In London, the British Ministry of Defence said in its daily update that celebrations of Russia's Airborne Forces (VDV) Day on August 2 were overshadowed by an apparently unsanctioned disclosure of paratrooper casualties in Ukraine.
