3 people stole subway train to ride in New York

Jan 30, 2025

New York [US], January 30: The New York Post reported on January 30 that New York City police are searching for three masked men who stole a parked subway train to drive around.
The incident happened on January 25 when the three people got on the R subway, drove away, and even filmed it and posted it on Instagram.
Once on board, the three criminals covered the security camera lens with a black marker, but still filmed themselves driving. It is unclear how long their trip lasted or how far they traveled, but at least part of the journey was on active rail lines, according to sources.
In a video posted on social media, the group can be seen driving the subway at nearly 50 kilometers per hour, while warning each other to keep their identities secret. "Cover your face! Cover your face!" one of the men warns.
The video also shows them passing through at least one local station on the express tracks and going through at least one signal, according to the New York Daily News.
The stolen train may have passed another working train, with one thief reportedly shouting "train" and telling a friend to check to see if they had been spotted.
The train was eventually brought back onto the tracks at a station in Brooklyn, where it is believed they stole it.
New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority employees discovered the train parked in a different location than where it had been parked, so they called the police at around 10:20 p.m. on January 25.
New York police are still searching for three suspects, who were all dressed in black and wearing masks when they boarded the train. AFP quoted police as saying that no one was injured in the incident, calling it "reckless endangerment".
The theft embarrassed New York City police, especially as it occurred amid increased police presence on subway trains to combat crime.
